For those not familiar with the tenets of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), the elevator sign reading “The Elevator is Broken, Please Use the Steps” in the lobby of The Bridge Club might be overlooked. On a recent GLCF site visit, Founder and Executive Director Bob Cox shared the story of the elevator and of opening a center inspired by The Crossroads Club in Delray Beach, Florida, which put him on the path to recovery. When Cox first toured the property on Merrimack St., he mentally mapped out the location for his faux elevator – a symbol that there are no elevators in A.A., only steps, the 12 steps.
The Bridge Club opened in January 2020 and hosts over 30 N.A./A.A. meetings every week. The club is open 365 days a year, seven days a week, with a dedicated staff of recovery coaches ready to assist those navigating their journey or returning from relapse. Additional services include assisting in detox, rehab, and sober living placement as well as helping those in recovery to re-enter the workforce.
Cox’s innovative leadership has broadened the work in the community to include more diverse recovery coaches that are more reflective of the city. As a result, Hispanic, Southeast Asian, and African community members have undergone training to become recovery coaches. A grant from GLCF partially funded the diverse recovery coach program.
The club includes large and smaller meeting rooms, a small room for VA officials to meet with veterans in recovery and trying to find a job, and an even smaller space they call “the reflection room.” There is also a commercial-grade kitchen space that Cox has plans to teach veterans and others needing a new career path how to cook.
Thank you to The Bridge Club for leading to a more inclusive approach to addiction recovery in our community.

PACH Outreach’s Robin Crocker and Carolyn DiCenzo accept a certificate of gratitude from a recent GLCF site visit.
Pepperell, Mass. – Continuing our Greater Lowell site visits, GLCF stopped by PACH Outreach. This volunteer-staffed, community-based nonprofit organization provides short-term assistance to Pepperell and Dunstable residents during difficult times.
PACH Outreach’s Robin Crocker and Carolyn DiCenzo gave a tour of their facility and shared PACH’s mission of neighbors helping neighbors. PACH Outreach provides food, personal care items, referrals, and other needed resources to help their clients get back on their feet. PACH Outreach serves scores of families and individuals each year, including many seniors, veterans, and disabled residents.
GLCF provided grant funding during the pandemic from the GLCF COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund for PACH Outreach to buy disinfectant cleaners in bulk quantities and immediately get these cleaners and masks into the hands of both their shopping and shut-in clients. As a result, every household received a package of disinfectant wipes, masks, and laundry detergent.
From PACH Outreach:
“Buying in bulk, we were able to get items such as wipes which clients could not readily find. We reinforced the messages about the importance of masks, surface cleaners, and overall cleaning in fighting disease by providing these tools to clients who have limited budgets for such items. And these supplies were made available just before the Thanksgiving holiday, a potentially high-risk time for catching COVID-19. Since our main charter is supplying food, we could not have been able to provide these supplies to all our clients without the funding received from GLCF.”
GLCF enjoyed touring the immaculately organized space and learning what makes them unique: providing birthday boxes to local children in need, growing vegetables in their garden (a board member’s project!), a library, and a wonderful community spirit! We are grateful to begin visiting our nonprofit partners and seeing the many ways they are making a solid impact in the community.

Continuing our Greater Lowell farm tour, GLCF’s Grants Team popped by Mill City Grows (MCG)’ Big Farm on a bright August day. MCG’s Executive Director Jessica Wilson showed us around the bountiful four-acre site.
The Big Farm was launched in 2014 and is leased from the City of Lowell. This thriving space is where MCG grows their larger crops and the bulk of their products. We marveled at the new wash and pack station used for cleaning and processing harvested produce for their Mobile Market. We learned a new farm term/concept known as fertigation, a fertilizer application method in which dissolved fertilizers are delivered to the crop through the irrigation system used at the Big Farm. The farm crew and volunteers were busy harvesting watermelons, tomatoes, lettuce, and more.
At the heart of Mill City Grows is their Urban Farm Program, which produces all the seasonal fruits and vegetables available to the community. They use organic practices and work side-by-side with community volunteers to grow fresh food for their Mobile Market, education classes, and local emergency food providers. In addition, the urban farms host educational classes for youth, community groups, and volunteers throughout the growing season.
GLCF funded a grant for Mill City Grows (MCG), who partnered with Lowell Public Schools (LPS) to distribute 70 weekly farm shares of fresh, locally grown produce to low-income families with children attending LPS as part of GLCF’s COVID-19 response funding. Additionally, as part of our Discretionary Grants awards, MCG received a grant for Food Justice Squad: Youth Education and Engagement at the Urban Farm. This remoter programming included: seed starting kits for 500+ first and second-grade students in Lowell Public Schools for students to grow herbs in their homes with corresponding curriculum packets and lesson plans; one 4-week Farm to Table course with four youth who received a weekly meal kit and a live virtual cooking lesson; and remote afterschool programming for two elementary and one middle school with ten students a week.
We loved learning about our partner’s incredible work and hearing their passion for improving our community. Thank you, Mill City Grows, for your continued food justice work.

The Women Working Wonders (WWW) Fund, a permanently endowed fund of the Greater Lowell Community Foundation, has announced the recipients of $56,800 in grants. These grants will support local nonprofit programs that empower women and girls to effect positive change in the community.
“During this time of economic hardship and public health crisis, Women Working Wonders is proud to support these six organizations in their work to improve the lives of women and girls,” said Carolyn Gregoire, Women Working Wonders Fund board president. “Now more than ever, our philanthropy and attention are needed in the Greater Lowell community.”
Recipients of 2021 WWW grants include:
Budget Buddies: $10,000 for New Workshop for Women: Financial Health for Families with Children
Challenge Unlimited: $10,000 for Equine Encounter: Healing to Leadership for Girls and Women
Coalition for a Better Acre: $10,000 for Sewing Training Program
Girls Inc. of Greater Lowell: $10,000 for Leadership Academy
Refuge Lowell: $10,000 for Girls and Young Women Creating Community Through Public Art
International Institute of NE: $6,800 for Creating New Avenues for Success (CNAFS)
Girls Inc. of Greater Lowell received a grant for their Leadership Academy, a new initiative planned for rollout in Fall 2021. “Girls Inc. of Greater Lowell is a place where all girls have the opportunity, resources, and support to become and be leaders,” said Executive Director Ashley Filipp. “With the generous support of the Women Working Wonders Funds, Girls Inc. of Greater Lowell’s Leadership Academy will directly elevate the cognitive, social, and physical skills of girls to improve their leadership aptitude. Girls will discover and develop their inherent strengths to grow up healthy, educated, and independent.”
Budget Buddies received a $10,000 grant for New Workshop for Women: Financial Health for Families with Children from the Women Working Wonders Fund.
Budget Buddies will use their grant to fund the New Workshop for Women, a program that provides strategies to address real-life costs of raising children. “Budget Buddies is so thankful for this amazing support from Women Working Wonders to develop a new workshop for our financial-resilience programs specifically focused on building the financial health of families with children,” said Danielle Piskadlo, Executive Director of Budget Buddies. “Almost 70% of the women in our financial wellness programs are moms, and women with children have been disproportionately impacted by job and/or income loss due to the pandemic because a lack of childcare forced so many women out of the workforce. This support from WWW will allow Budget Buddies to focus the women in our programs on making financial planning a family activity.”
Coalition for a Better Acre (CBA) Director of Programs, Cecilia Gutierrez Yapur (left) stands with master sewing instructor and Director of the UMass Lowell Fashion Makerspace/Fabric Discovery Center, Diana Coluntino (right), in front of sewing machines donated to CBA by Lowell textile manufacturer, UnWrapped, Inc.
Coalition for a Better Acre (CBA) received grant funding for their Sewing Training Program, a pilot program to be taught in English and Spanish, providing the job skills needed for local textile employment opportunities. “With support from Women Working Wonders, Coalition for a Better Acre (CBA) is eager to offer an accessible, highly flexible job skills training program to low-income women in Lowell, particularly non-native English speakers,” said CBA CEO Yun-Ju Choi. “CBA’s job skills training program benefits from a close partnership with master sewing instructor and fashion designer Diana Coluntino. After completing the training, participants will be placed in various jobs including textile manufacturing and fashion design production – right here in Lowell.”
Women Working Wonders provides annual grants in three key areas: assist women in transition, provide leadership development, as well as contribute to the beautification of the environment.
Founded in 2004 by a small group of women coming together to form a collective giving organization that focused on women’s issues, the fund has made more than $250,000 in grants to organizations supporting women and girls in the Greater Lowell area.
The Women Working Wonders Fund’s Power of the Purse 2021 event is scheduled for October 21. For information about WWW Fund and the upcoming event, visit: www.womenworkingwondersfund.com.

On a rare bright July day, GLCF Grants Team Jennifer and Sharon, toured Gaining Ground, a nonprofit organic farm in Concord, Massachusetts, that grows vegetables and fruit with the help of several thousand community volunteers to donate to area meal programs and food pantries.
Gaining Ground’s Executive Director Jennifer Johnson and Farm Manager Anna Kelchlin showed us around the farm, and we met members of their team as we toured the three acres that are actively cultivated to grow over 50 organic vegetables and herbs in fields interspersed with perennial hedgerows.
Last year, GLCF awarded Gaining Ground grants to address food insecurity to get fresh produce to people struggling to put food on the table. Gaining Ground normally relies on the help of thousands of volunteers to grow, harvest, and donate the nutritious produce from the farm. The grant support last year helped make it possible for them to continue their normal operations and levels of food production despite needing to temporarily suspend their volunteer program to comply with CDC recommendations. Most recently, Gaining Ground received a GLCF grant for Youth Food Insecurity to expand produce distribution to 3 HeadStart locations in Lowell and 1 in Dracut. This award will allow them to supply fresh produce to the kitchen staff at each location to be incorporated into healthy meals for the children.
The farm was buzzing with a crew of high school volunteers as well as abundant pollinators. After the rainiest July on record, it was heartening to see the bounty being harvested as a result of planning and proactive farming methods. There is much ingenuity at Gaining Ground. We saw the “rolling thunder” movable greenhouse solution that allows for movement of the greenhouse on a rail system to change the growing area to be covered. Another interesting element of the farm included a washing machine that was converted into a giant salad spinner Jennifer and Anna shared how sought-after that fresh, nutritious greens are from partner recipients.
Another highlight was the cutting flower garden beside the greenhouse. This cheerful, colorful space not only attracts beneficial insects that help protect crops from pests, the flowers also are used to create beautiful bouquets for GG’s recipients. “The inclusion of beautiful flowers in my Food for Families allotment sure cheers up my spirits while I steam up the fresh veggies. Thanks.” Gaining Ground’s Food for Families is a program for Concord and Carlisle residents who are referred to us by the Town of Concord’s social worker and both towns’ Councils on Aging. Funding from the Greater Lowell Community Foundation’s mobile market grant helped support this program. These special touches make a difference.
We are grateful to GG for their incredible hunger-relief work in Greater Lowell. We are #StrongerTogether

Littleton, Mass. – GLCF’s Grants Team put on their mud boots to tour Littleton Community Farm (LCF), a recent grant recipient. Amy Tarlow-Lewis, LCF’s Founder and Executive Director and LCF’s Farm Manager Glenn St. Tulnoynum showed us around the farm on a recent sunny afternoon. GLCF’s Jennifer Aradhya and Sharon Kim toured the 2.8 acres of farmland, leased from the New England Forestry Foundation and learned about the nutrient-dense crops that are grown using organic practices. The farm was buzzing with activity with a local Girl Scout presentation, a CSA pick up and a new U-Pick flower garden that helps fund their hunger-relief mission.
More about Littleton Community Farm (LCF)
LCF serves mainly Littleton, Ayer, Devens, Groton, Harvard, Lowell and Shirley through Littleton Elder and Human Services, Catholic Charities Food Pantry in Lowell and Loaves and Fishes in Devens. Through Merrimack Valley Food Bank in Lowell and Boston Area Gleaners (distribution to over 500 hunger relief agencies in the greater Boston area), we have an even wider reach. Middlesex County has 140,000 people who experience food insecurity or low food security, with a significant percentage being children. MA Department of Education asserts that 23% of children in Ayer/Shirley, and 50% in Lowell, are economically disadvantaged.
GLCF enjoyed the tour and seeing firsthand local solutions to increasing access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food. Healthy food is a human right.

Ayer, Mass. – The GLCF Grants Team: Jennifer Aradhya and Sharon Kim stopped by to meet one of our nonprofit partners and grant recipient Stone Soup Kitchen Ministries. Director Cyndi Lavin gave us a tour and shared some exciting improvement projects that are underway to enhance their ability to serve the community. There were so many stories shared during our visit, but we will share this one:
From Cyndi Lavin, Stone Soup Kitchen Ministries
“A gentleman showed up for the pantry who had walked from the campground he was living at in Littleton (appx. 6 miles away.) His truck had broken down and he was stuck at the campground with his father until the truck could be repaired. We were able to load him up with a lot of “peel and eat” and fresh foods, and one of our generous donors who “just happened” to be there at the time gave him a ride back to the campground so that we could give him even more than he’d have been able to carry.”
We are grateful to return to meeting our partners in person and seeing firsthand how nonprofits are making a strong impact in the community.

Women Working Wonders Fund (WWWF) is accepting grants for 2021. In 2020, WWWF awarded a $10,000 grant to Lowell General Hospital’s Cancer Center’s to be used toward the purchase of breast boards. These devices are used to provide a comfortable prone position for women undergoing radiation therapy for breast cancer, which can also ensure a more accurate dose of targeted radiation.
The Women Working Wonders Fund (WWWF), a permanently endowed fund of the Greater Lowell Community Foundation, requests proposals for this year’s grant cycle that opens on May 13. The Women Working Wonders Fund announced earlier this year that funding has been increased to award five grants at $10,000 each to program/projects that impact the lives of women and girls while advancing your organization’s mission.
“As we enter into our 17th year, we have been fortunate to continue to grow our endowment and increased grant support to our community,” said Susan West Levine, Women Working Wonders Fund board president. “COVID-19 has increased the needs of the community, the WWWF has responded by increasing the number of grants in 2021 to area nonprofits to help during this public health crisis.”
WWWF provides annual grants in three key areas: assist women in transition, provide leadership development as well as contribute to the beautification of the environment. Started in 2004 by a group of 72 women who each gave $500, the WWW Fund has now grown to $1.3 million. The fund has granted more than $240,000 to nonprofits supporting women and girls in the Greater Lowell area.
