Community Partners Come to the Aid of Seniors Facing Food Insecurity

Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley & North Shore (ESMV-NS) volunteer packages and later delivers hot lunch to homebound seniors. ESMV-NS received grants from the Greater Lowell Community Foundation to address elder food insecurity.

Over the past nine months, the coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated food insecurity among local senior citizens, and the Greater Lowell Community Foundation (GLCF) is stepping up to help.

Last spring, as COVID-19 began infecting older adults in high numbers, nonprofit agencies providing support to this demographic — like Minuteman Senior Services (MSS) and Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley & North Shore (ESMV-NS) — were hit hard by another jolt: Most of the volunteers they depended on to distribute meals to their senior clients were seniors themselves.

“Before COVID we had robust Meals on Wheels programs, as well as popular ‘congregate meal’ programs, which allowed people to eat together at their local senior centers,” explained Patti Dubielak, Director of Marketing & Development at MSS, which serves 16 towns, including Bedford, Burlington, Carlisle, Concord, Littleton and Wilmington.

“Once the pandemic hit in March, all our programs were impacted,” said Dubielak. “Plus, we lost about 60 percent of our volunteers because they were from high-risk groups, too.”

Compounding the situation is the fact that food insecurity among older people continues to grow, added Jennifer Raymond, Chief Strategy Officer of ESMV-NS, which serves seniors in 28 communities, including Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Lowell, Tewksbury, Tynsgboro and Westford.

“Hunger among seniors is not new, but COVID has shined a light on the problem in a much more visible way,” said Raymond. “We’ve seen a 30- to 35-percent increase in the numbers we are feeding.”

Minuteman Senior Services Dining Site Coordinator Marijana Petrovic packs frozen meals for delivery to homebound seniors in Burlington through Minuteman’s Meals on Wheels program.

Realizing these unforeseen forces were having a profound impact on elder health, last spring and summer GLCF distributed two COVID-19 Relief Fund Grants each to MSS and ESMV-NS, two nonprofits that support seniors in 14 of the 20 communities in the foundation’s service area.

The spring and summer grants were distributed by GLCF from the Massachusetts COVID-19 Relief Fund. Massachusetts COVID-19 Relief Fund supported those across the state most impacted by the COVID-19 health crisis, focused on essential frontline workers and vulnerable populations including the homeless, immigrant populations, people with disabilities, and those facing food insecurity. The fund worked in concert with regional community foundations and nonprofit leaders who partner with local leaders to understand the response and relief landscape, strategically filling in where gaps are pronounced.

And in November, GLCF continued addressing food insecurity among seniors by awarding another round of grants to both nonprofits from the foundation’s own COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund.

“Food insecurity was a major focus of the Massachusetts COVID-19 Relief Fund, and we realized elder-food insecurity was a growing concern,” said Jennifer Aradhya, GLCF Vice President of Marketing & Programs.

“Communicating with local Councils on Aging gave us a solid understanding of the situation, as well as a strategy for a funding solution that would have the most impact. Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley & North Shore, and Minuteman Senior Services support more than 1,000 food-insecure seniors in 14 of our communities. Partnering with these two nonprofits made perfect sense.”

Once the pandemic lockdown began, both nonprofits had to quickly shift staff to work remotely, as well as (virtually) train a new crop of younger volunteers. With funding assistance from GLCF, group meals at senior centers were converted to “grab and go” sites, which allowed seniors to pick up meals and safely eat them at home. Both organizations adopted new “contactless” delivery protocols for their Meals on Wheels programs, and made other innovations.

“Grant funding from the Greater Lowell Community Foundation is helping us keep older adults safely in their homes during the pandemic,” said Kelly Magee Wright, Executive Director of Minuteman Senior Services. “In addition to our daily Meals on Wheels delivery of a hot lunch, we are also delivering seven-day frozen meals packs, and grocery-store gift cards to seniors at risk of food insecurity.”

ESMV-NS is also using some of its GLCF funding to pilot a food shopping/delivery program for at-risk seniors, according to Raymond. “We learned that some consumers had additional nutritional needs beyond what could be addressed through standard Meals on Wheels,” she explained.

“This funding from GLCF allowed us to launch and continue a grocery store shopping-and- delivery program for people who are facing food insecurity, but may not have the transportation or other resources to shop for the special dietary items they need,” she said.

“Our seniors are especially vulnerable to serious complications from the COVID-19 virus, and is seeing food insecurity at much higher numbers,” said Jay Linnehan, GLCF President & CEO. “These nonprofit partners have been very diligent and innovative in their approach to continuing services to Greater Lowell elders, while adapting to new safety rules. We are so grateful to them.”

Support our Fall Appeal

The Greater Lowell Community Foundation Fund is the primary vehicle through which individuals and businesses can provide immediate support to address our community’s greatest needs and opportunities.

Your donation will provide critical operational support for us to:

Protect Lives:
Since March, to battle the humanitarian crisis imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic GLCF has issued 192 new grants to 112 area nonprofits, released all restrictions on previously awarded grants, and distributed free PPE. In total, we have provided more than $2.7 million in relief to organizations in and serving all 20 of the communities in GLCF’s catchment area.

Tackle Issues: GLCF convened Lowell’s Homelessness Task Force, formed in 2018, to change the course of Lowell’s homeless population and improve the quality of life for residents and the business environment downtown. The result was an action plan based upon a Housing First model that is currently being implemented.

Build Futures: Between the $557,000 awarded to 277 seniors at Lowell High School and additional scholarships awarded in other districts in Greater Lowell, GLCF helps support student’s college dreams with more than $700,000 in scholarship funding annually.

When you support our Fall Appeal, you are coming together with your neighbors, and helping to transform your community. Of note, the CARES Act legislation created a new above-the-line deduction that applies to all taxpayers for total charitable contributions of up to $300 ($600 for married couples.) The incentive applies to donations made to nonprofits this year and can be claimed on personal income tax filings next year.

Please consider making as generous a gift as you can.

Greater Lowell Community Foundation awards $531,000 in grants to nine local nonprofits

Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association (CMAA) received a recent grant to reduce food insecurity from funds from the Massachusetts COVID-19 Relief Fund.  This client was grateful to receive supplies delivered by CMAA staff.

LOWELL – In its latest round of funding through the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund, the Greater Lowell Community Foundation (GLCF) has awarded $531,000 to nine nonprofits.

The money, which came from the statewide Massachusetts COVID-19 Relief Fund, will support nonprofits in Greater Lowell that are working to provide food and housing, support for individuals with disabilities, frontline workers and immigrants, as well as other essential needs for vulnerable populations in need.

“These grants are critical to our ability to support local nonprofits on the frontlines of this pandemic,” said GLCF President & CEO Jay Linnehan. “We are very grateful to the Massachusetts COVID-19 Relief Fund and its donors for providing this support to our community in this incredible time of need.”

The nonprofits receiving grants in this latest round of funding are:

  • Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lowell (meals for youths)
  • Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association (CMAA) (reducing food insecurity and providing support of the CMAA Monorom Family Support Program)
  • Catie’s Closet Inc. (toiletry items and feminine hygiene products for students)
  • Community Teamwork, Inc. (food, emergency housing, supplies and staffing)
  • House of Hope (personal protective equipment for staff and residents)
  • International Institute of Lowell (housing sustainability and support)
  • Lowell Community Health Center (emergency medical interpreters)
  • Mill City Grows (community supported agriculture)
  • Lowell Transitional Living Center (deep cleaning and disinfecting)

The Massachusetts COVID-19 Relief Fund supports those across the state most impacted by the COVID-19 health crisis, focusing on essential frontline workers and vulnerable populations including the homeless, immigrant populations, people with disabilities and those facing food insecurity. The Fund works in concert with regional community foundations and nonprofit leaders who partner with local leaders to understand the response and relief landscape, strategically filling in where gaps are pronounced. GLCF Announces Cambodian Journalism Dream Scholarship Fund

Greater Lowell Community Foundation announces the Cambodian Journalism Dream Scholarship Fund, a scholarship established by Soben Pin, co-founder and publisher of the KhmerPost USA.

Lowell, MA – As a new year begins, the Greater Lowell Community Foundation is honored to announce the establishment of the Cambodian Journalism Dream Scholarship Fund. This new scholarship provides funds for an individual of Cambodian descent who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in journalism or communication.

Soben Pin, co-founder and publisher of the KhmerPost USA, established the Cambodian Journalism Dream Scholarship Fund through the Greater Lowell Community Foundation. Pin was born in Vietnam’s TraVinh Province during the years of turmoil that followed the fall of South Vietnam. With her own family disrupted by the consequences of the war, Soben along with her father, one sister, one brother came to the United States in 2000. After several years in California, the family moved to Philadelphia where Soben Pin excelled in high school receiving a scholarship to and then graduating from Penn State. While in college, she embraced Khmer culture.

“I understand the impact of what it means to receive a scholarship – it changed my life knowing someone believed in my dream,” said Soben Pin. “In today’s world, information is critical to our everyday life. From decision-making at a policy level or decisions for your own family – it is imperative to have individuals with trained skills in reporting/journalism that help guide you.”

“GLCF believes that investing in education for young people is a powerful investment in our community’s future,” states GLCF President & CEO Jay Linnehan. “This scholarship will support the dream of the next generation of Cambodian journalists.”

Based in Lowell since 2010, KhmerPost USA has printed over 1 million copies and now serves the New England region including the Greater Lowell, Lynn, Revere, MA and Providence and Cranston Rhode Island. In 2019, KhmerPost USA has expanded its circulation to Long Beach, CA. A recent television channel was launched in October 2019.

The first scholarship is scheduled to be awarded in Spring of 2021.

GLCF Announces LHS Scholarship Established in Honor of Gerald “Jerry” C. Barnes II

Greater Lowell Community Foundation announces the establishment of the Gerald C. Barnes II Scholarship Fund, a memorial scholarship named for Barnes, a 2015 Lowell High School graduate and lacrosse player.

As a new school year begins, the Greater Lowell Community Foundation is honored to announce the establishment of the Gerald C. Barnes II Scholarship Fund. This new scholarship fund honors the spirit of Gerald “Jerry” C. Barnes II by awarding scholarships to a Lowell High School (LHS) graduating senior lacrosse player.

A 2015 graduate of LHS, Barnes completed his junior year at UMass Amherst as a Natural Resource Conservation major when he died unexpectedly in June of 2018. An active outdoor enthusiast, Barnes worked for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation at Walden Pond in Concord and enjoyed playing lacrosse which he played throughout high school. To honor his memory, family and friends launched the Gerald C. Barnes II Scholarship Fund through the Greater Lowell Community Foundation.

“Jerry brought endless joy into so many lives. He always helped others and through the Gerald C. Barnes II Scholarship Fund a part of him will continue to help by assisting with college expenses,” said Donna Barnes, mother of Jerry. The first scholarship is scheduled to be awarded in Spring of 2020 at the Lowell High School Athletic Awards Banquet.

A fundraiser will be held on Friday, November 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. at The Keep, 110 Gorham St. in Lowell. All proceeds to benefit the Gerald C. Barnes II Scholarship Fund. To purchase tickets, visit: https://glcf.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/list/event?event_date_id=1363
